Carnauba wax as a paper coating ingredient, a stepping stone to more

Any paper used for packaging is coated with a waxy coating. This coating is used to protect the freshness of the packaged item. The demand for biodegradable is growing, and that certainly applies to the market for food-related packaging coatings as well. Traditionally, paraffin has mostly been used in paper coatings, however, paraffin is not sustainable and future-proof. This means that on both the processor and producer side there is a desire for sustainable alternatives.

Organic baking paper
Fredman Group is a prime example of this. The organization, based in Finland, has developed a wax-based baking paper consisting exclusively of organic ingredients. De Monchy International, among other wax suppliers to Fredman Group, has been closely involved in the development of this new product.

Carnauba wax has been used as an ingredient in the paper coating. Carnauba wax comes from the Brazilian palm tree the Copernica Cerifera, and is one of the hardest types of wax extracted from nature. The wax is used within a variety of applications, such as:
  • Loss agent for chocolate, liquorice and other confectionery
  • Coatings and adhesives
  • Electronics (chip production)
  • Shoe polish, stains and furniture and car maintenance products
  • Release agent for baked products
  • Inks
Because carnauba wax is naturally so hard, you would not initially think of carnauba wax as an ingredient in a paper coating. Nevertheless, after careful product consideration and testing, De Monchy and Fredman Group succeeded in finding a solution. In order to achieve a sustainable and future-proof coating for baking paper, carnauba wax proved to be very suitable and effective as a main ingredient.

Successful cooperation
To this day, the cooperation with Fredman Group is a very successful project and one of the examples of multiple innovative applications with de Monchy's natural waxes. We are currently investigating the development of a combination of waxes that offer unique properties and serve as alternatives.
