Hirenol Epoxy modifiers: advantages based on methylstyrenated phenol versus styrenated phenol

Written by Erikjan Plas on 30 June 2020Time to read: 1 minute

Due to new legislations and SVHC listing, alternatives based on styrenated phenol are preferably changed into Hirenol series. The Hirenol PL series is used in a lot of different applications such as a non-volatile viscosity reducer, as a reducer of brittleness and Shore Hardness by flexibilising. It can also improve anti-corrosion properties, act as a carrier for high loaded pigment pastes and could be an alternative for nonylphenol and benzyl alcohol in epoxy hardeners.

Advantages of Hirenol PL (methylstyrenated phenol)

The Hirenol PL series-based on methylstyrenated phenol provides a lot of advantages over styrenated phenol versions which are currently available in the market:

•    Hirenol PL is only labelled with (!) marking and less labelled than styrenated phenol.

•    Hirenol PL has lower viscosities.

•    Hirenol PL has better properties in water contact applications.

•    Hirenol PL is non/less bleeding.

•    Hirenol PL has lighter colour.

•    Hirenol PL is better non-crystalizing at room temperature.

•    Hirenol PL has better wetting properties.

•    Hirenol PL enhances pot-life (higher -OH version).

About Kolon Industries and De Monchy International

Our partner Kolon Industries has been focussing on specialty chemicals since 1957 and has Kolon Hirenol PL series (methylstyrenated) (CAS Number 68512-30-1) in their product portfolio which are versatile non-reactive diluents/viscosity reducers for epoxy and PU applications. Offering additional properties as non-volatility, non-yellowing, improved UV resistance, anti-corrosion, wetting, and improved adhesion. De Monchy International has the Hirenol PL Epoxy Modifiers from their partner Kolon already for many years in its well elected portfolio. Contact our specialist Erikjan Plas for more information.
